mlk/fbi is a well-made, fairly expansive documentary looking at the fbi's shameful abuse of power in how it wiretapped martin luther king jr. sam pollard's piece delves deeper into the story than most people likely know, looking at how j. edgar hoover initially had a "legal logic" to wiretap king (not necessarily a moral one, mind) due to concerns about his closeness to former communist stanley levison but stopped caring about that once they learned of dr. king's affairs.
it's hard not to feel like this documentary is incredibly topical, even now. hell, especially now, with black activism rightly on the rise and law enforcement being increasingly even more adversarial to them. pollard doesn't directly draw those comparisons, instead focusing on interviews of people discussing what was going on at the time in the 1960s. the film does lose itself just a bit in the middle, and it ends rather suddenly (not just because of dr. king's assassination) where it could have easily talked about what happened after that time. but that's somewhat nitpicky. there's a lot of good information here and pollard assembles it quite well for a documentary that should be seen by everyone so we understand where we were, and thus be a step closer to realizing how it relates to where we are now.
