part of my director's fortnight project #1 absence makes the heart grow fonder, but it sure does make the rest of you lonely ~ charles schultz
how do relationships morph when distance is introduced? can distance be beneficial when a relationship has become habituated? how does communication change when you lose the ability to communicate through body language? the fiances explores the minutia and nuances of one such relationship. here, the political overtones of ermanno olmi, while certainly still there, are made secondary in order to explore relationships that are forced to exist at a distance. olmi is able to find both the benefits that distance can have and the negative side effects that it can have.
the film does an excellent job of portraying both throughout its abbreviated run time. we can definitely feel the loneliness and the isolation that the main character feels after he moves and is adjusting to his new life. but once he starts corresponding with his girlfriend through letters, we also feel the bond between them growing stronger. as if they didn't know what they had in each other til they were gone. sometimes a little distance from someone that we have a relationship with can help us appreciate all that they do for us and how much that they mean to us.
this is one of those universal truths that olmi seems to be able to tease out in his films. he is always able to find something to say about humanity, it seems, even if the story he is telling is very specific to one locale or time period and makes the films that he is creating more compelling than some of the other filmmakers in the neorealist tradition for me.
and, of course, olmi brings his dynamic ability to create indelible images and amazing shots to this film, as well. there are some images in this film that are some of the best that i have seen him create. in this film, he is able to find some very interesting imagery that plays with the night landscape of this industrial towns and the lights that jump from the night that can be a bit spooky.
overall, this film is one that isn't talked about as much as it should be and isn't seen nearly as much as it should be. it is a beautiful film with a very sweet core.
