i grew up in the same era that took a special delight in tearing these young starlets apart. fame and celebrity status was a meat grinder with a preference for the young and beautiful. no duh, but still. i didn't understand it then, i don't understand it now.
britney spears survived us, as a society. she survived, came through all the bullshit that has legitimately claimed lives. britney deserves control of her life back, she deserves the space and time to heal and establish herself on her terms- as a woman, a mother, and if so inclined, as a superstar again.
the documentary does a fantastic job of showcasing britney's awareness and intellect- someone who's not a "diva" (a label she vocally resented), but a whip-smart entertainer with genuine vision for her craft. historically, we are in awe of performers like michael jackson and his ilk for exerting absolute creative control over their performances and music, yet britney is labeled "strong willed" for doing the same.
point being, she was never a flighty waif just following orders. she took control of her own image and business prospects very early on and stayed in-the-know about every deal, every contract, and in control of every performance. for anyone to assert she's not now capable of that same tenacity, sense, and personal agency is absolutely mind-boggling. criminal, even.
the media's fabricated image of spears as a "crazy" and unpredictable madwoman who's liable to lash out or breakdown for no reason is gut-wrenchingly unfair. it's like shooting someone in the kneecap and then criticizing them for screaming in pain for "no reason". it goes without saying now, britney was under the kind of pressure that would make anyone react in exactly the way she did. this wasn't random. this was instigated, repeatedly, and treated like a spectator sport.
every late night show punchline, every game show gag, every tabloid headline- they all cut and sting, underlining with merciless emphasis how extremely fucking cruel the world was to her. why did nobody help? why did nobody do anything? i kept asking myself.
because they were too busy enjoying the show, obviously.
in retrospect, chris crocker seems less like a crazed fanatic and more like someone with a multitude of empathy- all too aware of the cruelty being pelted at the princess of pop on a daily basis. it might have been its own punchline at the time, but goddamn it- he was right: leave britney alone.
