like pulpy paperback fiction, payback is predictable and often silly in its noir-ish melodrama, but it's all part of the charm. the movie is aggressively dated- distinctly 90's like the viewing experience isn't quite complete unless it's bookended by hbo bumpers and is being watched on an old tube tv. maybe the vhs scanlines are a bit hectic around the sex scenes.
despite how awkward they might seem now, it's easy to remember a time when sex scenes like this were a veritable staple of the genre. of course, payback makes sure it has all the right ingredients for this kind of film- leaving nothing to chance: the roadside diner, the buried box of cash, promises made in blood, ex-cons, shifty cops, a hardluck drifter, and an easy-on-the-eyes waitress.
you don't even need to watch the movie- you probably saw the whole thing in your head just now. nevertheless, neo-noir relics from the 90's, like this, really appeal to me. they're so eager to entertain they're practically exploitation flicks. the cast has a couple recognizable faces in it- solid character acting all around. the movie crackles with energy whenever bullets have to fly. you'll see the ending coming a mile away.
it's comfort food- easily tuned out at your discretion for ease of double-tasking. save for a few moments, it's mostly unremarkable- yet in the same way those paperbacks conjure fond memories of cheap thrills and the smell of used bookstores, payback brings to mind the well-stocked shelves of countless video stores- brimming with direct-to-video movies that'd work just hard enough to earn your five night rental cash with a side of microwave popcorn.
good times.
