this film has a very crucial problem, which is the pace. the film didn't feel like 12 years. the director failed to show the character undergoing a change in psyche over the 12 year period, which is probably why the film didn't convey the audience that the 12 year period has passed. read more

certain topics are ones you just automatically associate with the phrase "oscar bait." if a film deals with world war ii (especially the holocaust), it's oscar bait. if a movie examines the life of a complex historical personality, it's oscar bait. and most certainly if a film tackles the topic of slavery in the united states, it falls under that very same category. and there's an argument to be made for the fact that some (if not many) of these films are made with big gold statuettes in the studio heads' eyes, which is sure to earn the derision of many. and in some cases, that derision is... read more

52 years in 52 weeks 2013 film school drops out 2018 week 45 - movement - nollywood watched this on blu-ray. even though ive seen steve mcqueens past works, i think the only reasons why i didnt see this movie was because it won the oscar for best picture and, well, i dont want to be depressed for two hours. after watching this, i have no issue with the selection of this movie. its an incredible, moving and well directed film. it deserves all the accolades. read more

very dramatic movie. but didnt see too many aspects of a "great" movie. instead, they focused on the subject itself and didnt try to make a great movie. solomon northup is a free-born black man who works as a violinist and living free. some day, he is invited to washington city to do is art with violin but he is kidnapped and he worked as slave for years. noone believed that he was a free black man and he had a family. a white man, a constructer came to where he works (brad pitt) then said "carrying your letter is not a favor to you, more like a duty to me". later on, solomon northup is saved... read more

Free American black man is kidnapped and sold as a slave in the first half of the 1800s. McQueen's frustratingly uninvolving adaptation of Solomon Northup's autobiographical book (first published in 1853) wastes no time in getting Ejiofor in chains but then needs verbal exposition to try and express the protagonist's feelings about his lost freedom. Hopefully effective as a popular manifesto against racial hatred, film occasionally plays like a glorified, art-house version of "Mandingo". read more

Viewing this 10 years late, but feel like it's already become a touchstone for modern historical dramas and perhaps the definitive depiction of US slavery. McQueen doesn't shy away from presenting the violence or conditions but the moments that hit the hardest are the when Solomon and others are robbed of simple dignities. I enjoyed most of this, with the exception of one scene where a big name white producer on the movie suddenly shows up and gives the slave owner a big lecture on the ills of slavery and racism whilst waving his golden locks around. I never expected this movie to be this tragic😢 it's based on true incident though 😢 i can't even imagine how traumatic the cast and crew would be while filming this movie 😢 it's a live realistic tragedy movie 😢 Slavery is the biggest sin in the world imo. But even there are many laws encouraging slavery back then😢 how fuckn cruel it is 😢 i dunno how the filmed the whip shot. It seemed so real 😢 and the whip wound that patsy had was literally broke my heart into pieces 😢😢 how could you manage to make that scene???? 😢 There's a scene where patsy begged patt to kill her in order to stop all this... read more
