of course the guy who gave us the 90s gamera trilogy steps in with what is arguably the best godzilla movie since the showa era. shot with so much purpose, identity, sense of mythology, and awareness of how fun and at the same time terrifying a monster movie can be. i don't know how this one goes over with "purists", but i'm all for anything that only uses the template as a point of reference more than a set of rules. read

mothra returns to the series and suddenly the millennium series stops sucking. coincidence? unlikely. standard godzilla checklist: introduce monster 1 - check fuck about with human story for ages - check bring in the other monster(s) - check more human shite - check bring in the other other monster(s) - check humans interact with the monster(s) - check finally the monsters clash - wouldn't say "finally" because the final battle starts quite early and there's the brief encounter with baragon before that. starting to think the "have an awesome godzilla scene in the first 15 minutes" thing read
