film #19 of hooptober part vii: the new blood the godzilla franchise is easily the most famous kaiju franchise of all-time. the 1954 monster movie is a classic for a ton of reasons: technical innovation, a great story and, of course, a message about the fear of nuclear holocaust -- particularly in japan -- following world war ii. its immediate sequel, godzilla raids again is...not any of that. rushed into production by toho because of the first film's massive success, motoyoshi oda's take adds a second kaiju but nothing else and loses much of the first film's resonance. a lot of this can be... read

i expected this series' descent into creature features to be a bit slower and more gradual. this is very focused on the military trying to defeat godzilla, and to a lesser degree anguirus and the battle between the two, with little depth. you could apply the same metaphor as the first film but if that was the intended meaning, it was implemented quite poorly. there's honestly not much about this that i can praise. the miniature city and mountain destruction is still well done, if unconvincing to the modern eye. the creature costumes are alright but especially the quadruped anguirus is just... read

So my plan was just to enjoy Godzilla Raids Again for what it is and try not to compare it to its predecessor too much.
But man, I definitely wasn't prepared for how fluffy this thing is. I'm about to... read

Thomas' Super Godzilla Journey #2
In few words, Godzilla Raids Again has a rather interesting first act but it all comes crashing down with a mind-blowingly boring second act and a somewhat redeeming finale.
I really appreciate the serious tone, some technical accomplishments and the subtle postwar symbolism... however, the human storyline and the atrocious pacing leave much to be desired. read
