endlessly creative and equally savage in its gory karate killings, the street fighter makes a brutal star out of its lead- shinichi (sonny) chiba. at first, he seems like a wild man, taking and attacking with reckless abandon- switching loyalties on a dime. but as the convoluted plot lurches forward, chiba's mercenary is revealed to have some measure of a personal code- and real human feelings to boot. he's certainly a scene stealer with his bloody fists and animated expressions. even now, decades later, a fair amount of the movie's gory brutality still packs a punch- despite it often looking... read

if only the jean claude van damme film had been a little more like this one... well, not so much like this one... in brief: the street fighter is grindhouse exploitation cinema on a whole 'nother level. graphically violent even by today's standards, the film is all about the savagery...both physically and emotionally. it's a story with almost no heroes...just those who have power and those who are without it. the story is actually rather unpredictable, with a number of back and forth turns of the plot. more than anything, the driving force seems to be terry tsurugi's ("ter-ryyyyyy!") refusal... read
