damn this one was cool. hedorah was a really cool-looking monster, i loved his design, how his eyes lit up, and how godzilla kept punching holes into him and ripping pieces off of him. this felt like top-tier monster craziness that's best experienced at a drive in with a very enthusiastic crowd. the pacing is airtight and the kaiju action is aplenty. i can't imagine too many people getting bored with this one.
both aesthetically and tonally, this is a dark godzilla movie. as these movies feature gargantuan monsters that stomp and smash through cities, we're usually far enough removed from the vicinity of the carnage that we don't see people dying by their hand- even though we know it obviously happens. however, in this movie, we see people dying up close several times and in rather horrifying ways no less.
it really served to hammer home the environmental themes which are as timely now as they were in the 70's- and that's pretty sad. a lot of godzilla movies tack on some kind of throwaway message, but this is one of a select few that genuinely embraces its own message. offhand i can only liken it to the original gojira (1954) and godzilla vs. biollante. which are arguably two of the all-time best g-flicks out there. so, just saying- godzilla vs. hedorah is in good company.
