A reformed white supremacist (Edgerton) who's become the gardener - and lover - of a wealthy woman (Weaver) who's about 25 years his senior becomes the mentor of his employer's younger niece (Swindell). Exactly one year after The Card Counter, Paul Schrader's new portrait of a man seeking redemption for his past sins is more open in giving him a second shot at life and although it demands some amount of sternness from his protagonist it doesn't force him to go through as much pain and violence as the previous film. Weaver bravely fleshes her character as much as its final, a bit hectic, behavior allows her and gracefully bows out to allow what's easily the happiest ending - although not the most satisfying - in Schrader's recent filmography.
