Compliance

there's an unwritten rule that films should be devices for catharsis. especially films tackling difficult issues, we usually feel better - or at least clearer - after a film than before it. this is not the case with compliance. you will finish the movie confused, angry, unsure, and a variety of other feelings that we don't associate with "a good movie." does this make it bad if this is the film makers intention? is it exploitative? is it accusatory? the fact that our response is to ask these questions about the film rather than to ask questions about human nature, i believe, is the problem.... read more
