"Life Doesn't Give You Bumpers," Ethan Hawke lies.
Eleven years later, Mason moves into college and within one short scene he has somehow made three friends and embarked upon a life-affirming and romantic hiking trip. The movie then ends on a "just let life happen to you!" note.
It makes the whole film ring false, and despite being an incredibly technically accomplished film, with fantastic performances throughout and some next level direction, I left the cinema with a very sour taste in my mouth.
In Boyhood's attempts to be distant and philosophical, it merely ignores the struggles of childhood. Things happen to Mason because that's what's supposed to happen. He moves a lot, he always has friends. He goes to high school, he has a serious girlfriend. He grows older, he has a stable job. We never see the how or why of any of these things, it never shows the impossible fight that is fitting in as a kid, it never shows how long Mason needed to look to get a Job: the film never earns anything.
Boyhood attempts to say that life doesn't give you bumpers, but tragically the film is Mason's bumpers.
