when you watch a tim burton movie you can tell it is a tim burton movie within 10 minutes and sometimes you watch a movie that is not a tim burton movie but feels like one (lemony snicket for example). when you watch big eyes (minus about 30 seconds of the whole film) you would never know tim burton directed this.
that doesn't make this a bad film, it just makes it different, and unique in the oeuvre of burton's work. here he takes a true story and creates an exceptionally well acted (by the leads) and enjoyable film that breezes by and then comes to a somewhat of an abrupt ending.
amy adams is fantastic here. she is always great and this film is no exception. christoph waltz is another actor who is always great. again, this is no exception. i have to say though that maybe he was too likeable. he isn't supposed to be, he is supposed to be a liar and a cheater but by the end i still liked him. i don't think this was the point but really, its christoph waltz and no matter how evil a character he plays you just can't help but like him.
since this is based on a true story and having seen the trailer i (and almost every viewer) will know how this film ends. to get to that end you will sit through 90-ish minutes of enjoyable, humorous and well paced story. as the film comes to a close, with not much runtime left, the climax and denouement comes and goes way to quick and then when that ends it just as quickly cuts to the credits. this doesn't so much ruin the film as it more so lessons the impact of it.
overall i had a good time with this film. those who say burton hasn't directed a good film in a very long time baffle me. this (and a few others from the past decade) are most definitely good films. this one would be much better if it had a stronger and longer ending but regardless it is still a fun, enjoyable and sad (yet ultimately happy) true tale that is as fascinating as anything burton has ever made up.
