i finally finished the box set features of dawn of the dead. having watched the theatrical version, a bunch of trailers and the doc the dead will walk i got to the last documentary on the set document of the dead.
this doc features great footage and interviews with the principal cast and creators of the film. it delves deep into romero's creative process and his genius. it even has behind the scenes footage of martin. the things discussed and the topics explored are vast and very interesting in their own right but...
... three things hold this doc back from being anything but a one time watch. first, it's pretty boring with a really droll narrative (it does pick up at the end. second. some topics and/or scenes drag on for too long. third, and most important, the content goes nowhere.
i'll explain that a little. the doc is filmed from 1978to 1980 and is about romero and dawn of the dead. it ends that portion with romero saying dawn is the middle not the end of his 'dead' films. then we cut to ten years later. 'yes' i think, 'they are going to discuss day of the dead.' but they don't. they are onset of two evil eyes and they discuss monkey shines. no mention at all of day of the dead. what a wasted opportunity and at the end of the day it makes this documentary feel incomplete, inconsequential and downright useless.
after trudging through a boring hour (although the information given was very very good) and then getting some enjoyment in the last half hour suddenly the film ends with no regard for it's sequel or continuation of it's first hour. i was very disappointed with this film but i am glad i watched it.
