"You never know the length of the fuse." There is this sublime shot of one of our two protagonists walking alongside a stream of lava. It feels almost like the two parts of the frame are played in a different speed: the slow, almost clumsy walking by the human. The fast, ruthless streaming of the lava. In shots like these, the film is at its best. A meditation on geological time, that is at times both tranquil and aggressive, just as the volcanoes are. Sadly, the format of the film is overtly safe, and fails to end the story on a powerful note. The narrator pushes an interesting read
