in 2007, filmmaker oren peli put himself on the hollywood map with the incredible breakout success of paranormal activity. while he has not directed a film since that first entry in the franchise, peli has been doing a lot of producing, delivering creative input to films like insidious as well as the short-lived abc show the river. those two projects were both successes, at least creatively. this one somehow manages to top paranormal activity 4 as his most resounding failure yet. with first-time director bradley parker behind the camera, peli's co-written script places four young adults--one couple, the girl's brother and the couple's mutual friend--in kiev so that peli can turn the real-life tragedy of chernobyl into a horror film. and don't get me wrong; i am not necessarily opposed to that idea, which did attract some criticism from chernobyl survivor's groups. it's been going on thirty years and there is a statute of limitation on those kinds of things. i just think it was a disgrace to turn such a prime location for a horror film into such an insultingly stupid film. parker does one thing right: he captures the spookiness of the setting nicely. obviously they didn't actually shoot at chernobyl--hungary and serbia substitute--but the setting looks legitimate and there is definitely an unnerving factor there. however, it doesn't excuse the idiocy of the characters that bring them to that point, nor does it give the film a pass for taking an immediate nosedive once the bad things start happening. the unique setting is quickly wasted on a generic plot and bargain-basement effects. it is exceedingly hard to care about whether the characters live or die when they are willing to sleep in a ruined vehicle on the grounds that they know still has a certain radioactive level, thus ensuring that even if they do live they're probably going to get cancer because they were morons. this desperately wants to be another paranormal activity-style hit, but instead it comes off as looking inferior to even 2011's the darkest hour, which is pretty a damning statement.
