i really like joe wright as a director. everything i've seen of his has been great in my opinion which leads me to believe that the soloist is better than people say and pan will be better than i think it will be but i'm here to talk about his film anna karenina so let's do that shall we?
i just watched it and then gave it a score of 87/100 and then just happened to see that on imdb it has a score of 6.6/10. 6.6/10? did i just watch the same movie? there is no way this film deserves that low, no way at all.
it has a few faults but we will get there. let's discuss the positives. first, the look. gorgeous, stunning, beautiful; all words to describe keira knightly but also words to describe how this film looks. it is the epitome of cinematography perfection. and the editing is top notch (mostly), the acting extraordinary and the music stunning and thrilling. the pace of the film is fast and loose and keeps you interested and exhilarated the whole time.
the editing as i mentioned is mostly amazing. it starts off ingeniously cutting between characters and sets (perhaps in camera) and propelling the story. the film is done almost like a play and the sets change on screen as the actors perform and the camera movies. it's so well done but somewhere in the middle of the film the technique disappears and it becomes a standard edited romantic period piece until suddenly this great technique returns full force. so well done, so clever, so very original.
that's why i say mostly. i also think the film crams in way to much in to little a time. i haven't read the book (and perhaps that's why it received the 6.6) but i imagine a lot more of the characters are fleshed out. in this film, other than keira we don't feel to much for anyone else although we do follow their stories.
it is these reasons why this film might not hold up to being rewatched as much as say pride and prejudice. even still it is a great film with great production values and masterful direction by the yet to disappoint me joe wright. it also stars the ever angelic keira knightly who is not only a great actress but perhaps the most beautiful girl in the whole wide world (i have a slight crush if you couldn't tell).
6.6/10, not a chance in hell. even if it doesn't capture the brilliance of the classic novel (again, i wouldn't know) it is still a breathtaking, fast paced, gripping well told movie that never fails to entertain. 6.6/10, not a chance in hell.
