The Place Beyond the Pines

a gritty, grainy "triopic" about fuzzy choices and consequences that span generations. feeling long at times yet cutting straight to the bone in terms of dialogue, this rich character-centric tale (set in the sleepy pines of upstate new york) causes one to question heroes, like in disney's hunchback theme: "who is the monster and who is the man?" there are also elements of a perpetuating class divide ala "rich dad, poor dad", but the movie ends well with an open-ended possibility of breaking the cycle. read more

Наверное, это тот фильм, который или зайдет и будет прям одним из любимых, или ты просто будешь его ненавидеть(особенно если смотришь его ради Гослинга. хихихи). В общем, единственное что могу сказать, что не связанно с эмоциями - каст. Ахуеть, как вообще возможно было собрать такой дримкаст, так ещё и сделать так, чтобы никто не перетягивал на себя одеяло?! The place beyond the pines (shit title) has a great first act, wanted more of Ryan Gosling robbing banks. I cringed when I saw Eva Mendes but for once she was actually alright. The second act with a dull and boring Bradley Cooper almost kill the film, thankfully there's a good supporting cast. The third act is pretty good but damn small fucking world eh? read more

There's lots in this that I really liked, like the opening sequence/title drop, basically anytime someone was on a motorcycle, Gosling being a moody little asshole, Ray Liotta being a scary asshole, but the direction the story ends up going in and the way it goes about it, whilst a little bold and admirable, doesn't quite come off, and by the end I felt more like I had watched an episode of some police drama than a movie, but it's by no means a total collapse and doesn't do a discredit to the parts that were really growing on me. read more
