i'm very conflicted about how i feel about this film. overall, i think this film is very effective in what it is trying to accomplish. it is a very uncomfortable viewing experience and is,at times, able to implicate the viewer in the violence that is being portrayed in the film. i think that the central device does a very good job of generating discomfort among the viewer. at times, i think that it is not as committed to its central conceit as it should be, as it sometimes cuts away from the first person perspective or use reflections a little too much. nevertheless, the film is impressive in its ability to generate discomfort among the viewers by literally placing them in the head of a psychotic killer.
at the same time, what is the point of doing this in the first place? unlike a clockwork orange or funny games, this film doesn't really seem to have anything on its mind except shock and discomfort. it really very simple in its scope and not very deep thematically. that is perfectly okay but it impacts this film in some very specific ways. first, it makes the film feel inauthentic in its claims. it feels like a film that is just masking its exploitative aims under a veneer of intelligence that doesn't really exist. second, it feels really exploitative towards women in the way that it transform them into simple objects and fodder for a main character. third, the portrayal of mental illness is skin deep and just not very realistic. all of these things really hamper this film and prevent it from getting at something deeper and becoming a film that is really worth engaging with.
