bsg: the plan takes place between the the first two seasons of the show only from the cylon point of view. it attempts to answer and explain just exactly what the plan the cylon's had was. there are two problems with this.
firstly, the show's first two seasons are jam packed with so much going on that to tell it in a two hour recap movie ends up just feeling jumbled, very jumbled and every scene (for the most part) feels way to quick.
secondly, the plan, in the show, was pretty self explanatory and nothing new is revealed here. yes there are couple of moments and characters that are revealed to be integral to the plan in the end but the overall idea of the plan was just repeated information.
so in the end, this movie feels like a bit of a waste of time. it does feature the great effects that bsg is known for and maybe a little less of the great camera work (still very good) that the show had. it does feature most of the characters from the show, if some only in archival footage, and they do a masterful job of linking old and new footage together.
one thing about the plan is that it is a lot more graphic than the show. was that a pair of breasts i just saw? is what i thought at the beginning. yes it was i said after more and more were shown (in the changing room and a graphic-ish sex scene). was the nudity needed? not at all but it was appreciated. it's just too bad that tricia helfer never got naked here.
overall, the plan wasn't really needed but it is nice to return to the world of bsg and it is kind of fun to see another perspective on events and scenes we have already seen. i found it to be a bit repetitive in the end and it jumped around too much and scenes were too fast. i think the only way this would make sense is if you have seen the show otherwise you would be completely lost but then this was made for people who have seen the show and is not a great place to start if you haven't.
maybe, if i hadn't just marathoned all four seasons of the show i would of liked this better like returning to an old friend after years away and finding nothings changed. instead i liked it but found it to be a bit redundant like going for cooking lessons and only being taught how to make buttered toast.
