a fairly interesting look into the advertising campaign surrounding the 1988 referendum in chile that removed augusto pinochet from power, no executes well enough, but really isn't anything special. pablo larrain made two big stylistic choices and neither one really worked. the film is shot on the same style of film that was used for tv commercials in 1988, this allows them to show actual footage from the commercials and other news footage from the time without it being jarring. with how frequently they cut to old footage, the visual shift would have been jarring without this technique. however, it also causes the film to look cheap and almost like a student film at times. part of this is on the quality of the film and part is on the quality of the camera work. there also is essentially no score for most of the film, just allowing ambient sounds to fill the void. this accentuates the cheap feeling and student film qualities. considering this is a major chilean production and was their entry for the oscars, there should never be moments when it feels like a cheap film, but it often does.
