wow. that was unexpected. this film, the sessions, is a complete joy from start to finish. it's not overly sad, which i was expecting, and although it is kind of sad it is also extremely uplifting and life affirming and will leave you just feeling joyous happy. telling the (true) story of a man with polio who can't move anything but his head and the lengths he goes to feel human (by losing his virginity) this film is highly original and a real treat to be seen. it's directed sublimely and it never panders to its audience at all. the script and characters are all fully formed and seem real,... read more

the sessions is written and directed by ben lewin, a filmmaker who is best known for a few minor comedies in the late '80s and early '90s as well as a couple episodes of shows like ally mcbeal and touched by an angel; however he hadn't really done anything in the industry over the past nine years before the sessions. lewin is himself a survivor of polio, having contracted it at the age of six which is the same age that o'brian did. it is clear that this film is a personal one to him and the care he takes regarding the script, which is based on o'brien's essay, pays off handsomely. one of the... read more
