Pitch Perfect

There were some great jokes, Fat Amy was reliably the best thing, and every so often there was a non-terrible song, but the sheer predictability of the plot, and playing predictable beats without any self awareness led to a tiring experience punctuated by not enough laughs. I could not care less about this romance story, movie, you can be funny, so put the funny back on the screen. No? Okay, just reference the breakfast club a bit more, that's never been done before. read more

it's interesting the way the breakfast club is used in this movie, pointing out that a good ending is nothing with the journey... because that is pretty lacking here. i also don't know about it being a comedy when there are no comedians in the cast, but music movies are nothing if not a guilty pleasure of mine and most of the musical numbers were pretty well done. read more

A nerdish first-year high school student joins an all-female A Cappella choir and helps leading it to success in the national singing championship. Adapted from a non-fiction book by Mickey Rapkin, this enjoyable if unsurprising underdog comedy has a lively ensemble cast but it offers both Kendrick and Wilson a golden chance for a star turn. Heralded as a pivotal plot point, the Riff Off scene is curiously underwhelming but "Pitch Perfect" has the right attitude to just sing its way past it. You have better stuff to do than checking out the sequel. read more
