boy have i been wanting to see this film for a long long time. last night it finally came to fruition and all i can say is that, while well made, well acted and a decent story it didn't live up to my expectations.
i'm not sure why i was expecting a brilliant (and disturbing) piece of horror/thriller fiction as i never found lynch's other work that good, but i was and had heard good things about this film. it wasn't brilliant but it was engaging (on a primal level i guess).
the story, about a serial killer who holds a boy captive and wants him to take over the reigns, is decent but it's got an ending (while enjoyable) that comes out of left field so late in the game that it feels almost tacked on. i liked it when i watched it but really came out of the blue, unless i missed something (i did start it at 3:00 in the morning).
it's also not graphic enough, and while i do believe that graphic content doesn't always have to be used i feel that in this case the underused graphic-ness made the movie less impactful, suspenseful and disturbing. it ended up feeling long, slow and drawn out (which i think was the point).
i will say though that vincent d'onofrio gives another, in a line of, amazing performance. he is a great actor and deserves to be a bigger star. he alone makes this film more frightening than it turns out to be, he alone keeps you captivated and he alone brings this movie up in the rankings.
in the end chained ends up being a pretty pedestrian affair. it's not bad but it's not great and it squanders some of it's potential in under doing it sometimes. if you like torture, horror, murder and criminal minds (but without the cop angle) then you'll get a kick out of this film. just don't go in expecting brilliance because, like me, you will be disappointed.
