atmospheric and epic, but somewhat trite and somewhat predictable in a lion king kinda way. the ape-facial expressions were pretty well cgi'ed in. read

fuck me sideways with a banana or seven. this blew my mind. those first 10/20 minutes were beautiful. i'd happily have sat there for the full running time just watching those apes go about their day. sadly that wasn't to be and i knew that. thankfully, barring a few minor annoyances, the rest was brilliant too. the one annoyance that stands out above the rest is koba riding a horse with two machine guns. if anything says producer input it's that. read

The recent Apes movies are like a middle finger to Abram's Star Trek's rejection of sci fi as metaphor, replacing theme with spectacle and making nonsense action movies. Dawn represents a completely different philosophy. Every element of the movie is in service of its greater thematic aims. Even the fuckin' Aspect Ratio has been chosen deliberately and carefully. It's what sci fi should be. read
