i originally rated this a 98 out of a 100. i was wrong. it is without a doubt doubt a perfect 100 out of 100. don't agree? well hear me out why don't you... based on my review system this is a perfect film. let's break it down shall we:
production design: 10 out of 10...
the sets, the locations, the effects are all perfect. has a wes anderson film ever looked so pretty? yeah, it looks just like a wes anderson film but, like all his movies, while it is instantly recognizable as an anderson film it still looks different to anything else he has done before.
this time it is absolutely stunning. every location, every set, every effect is perfect. even the cheap models (like the skiing scene) work perfectly to make you laugh and put you right into the world he has created.
cinematography: 10 out of 10...
shot in 3 different aspect rations, each one more beautiful than the last, this film cannot get anything less than a 10. the 1.33:1 ratio is perfect in the way it captures the old school film feel of the 30's and the gorgeous 2.35:1 ratio really makes the scenes in the 60's pop.
and then each shot is perfectly framed, all of them filling the eye with visual splendidness. you can pause any frame and marvel at just how much is put into each one. it really is so pretty.
re-playability: 10 out of 10...
you can watch this over and over and never get bored. it is laugh out loud funny. it is touching. it is unique. it is entertaining. it is a 10 in this category.
originality: 10 out of 10...
like i said earlier. this may be easily recognizable as a wes anderson film but it is still completely different to anything else he has done or pretty much anything you have ever seen before. it is a unique vision of a unique story that can only be wes anderson and could only be a 10.
costumes: 10 out of 10...
the costumes and make up are so good you don't even realize that some of it is make-up. each decade on screen feels completely different. each character feels completely unique. each costume is meticulously crafted and looks beautiful. tilda swindon's make-up... come on. that was make-up? you would never know.
directing: 10 out of 10...
based on what i said above and will say below can this category be anything but a 10?
editing: 10 out of 10...
perfectly paced, perfectly put together, not a single shot too long or too short, not a single jarring cut, not a single thing wrong with the way the film flows. yep, also a 10 for editing.
acting: 10 out of 10...
holy shit ralph fiennes was amazing, perfect, truly a performance to behold. so was everyone else. as you watch the film you are amazed at the cast. it opens with tom wilkinson, then we get jude law, f. murray abraham and jason schawrtzman. soon enough we get ralph fiennes, tilda swindon and the awesome jeff goldblum. and suddenly adrien brody and willem dafoe show up. and then ed norton. what!!! but wait, suddenly we get harvey keitel and not soon after bill murray and the always amazing bob balaban show up. you also get owen wilson in a small role, saoirse ronan, mathieu amalric and lea seydoux also appear. and tony revolori (in the lead role) is fantastic.
how could this category not get a 10?
music: 10 out of 10...
all at once the music is fun, epic, exhilarating. joyous, weird, unique, and most of all enjoyable. there is note a rong note to the score as every motif is perfectly suited to images that unfold. another 10.
script: 10 out of 10...
perfect jokes. perfect plot. perfect characters. perfect dialogue. perfect action. perfect set up. perfect ending. perfect middle. perfect script. perfect 10.
see, how can it not get 100 out of a 100? i thought this might be my favourite wes anderson film when i first saw it in the theatres but i wasn't sure. this rewatch has confirmed it. it is and watching it last night, and it coming to an end only made me seriously excited for what he does next. i can't wait.
oh, and if you didn't stay for the credits you should because the little dancing russian man is awesome.
