director's comments rewatch. this is such a love-it-or-hate-it movie and so much about style and sound that i was particularly curious what harmony korine would say. he said a lot, actually, about every aspect of the movie, from the technical, to how certain scenes were shaped, to what was off-script, improvised to what degree and who contributed to the on-screen result, to what inspired him or others to include a certain something, and he also explained scenes, plot developments (such as they are), and stylistic choices. and yes, there is a lot of "i've been meaning to have this detail in a(ny) movie." and "the lights/setting looked so great, we just filmed this extra scene right there with whatever dialogue we all came up with." - for all that it looked like stunt casting, he seems to have relied a lot on the cast's ability to embody the role and deliver even just based on spur of the moment directions.
it was totally worth it. oh, and the movie is still gorgeous.
