film #25 of hoop-tober 2.0here comes the devil eventually gets around to some madcap, crazy horror goodness but it spends far too much time in a detour into frustration before getting there. adrián garcía bogliano's film spends much of the first act delving into seemingly random sex scenes and poor character decisions before getting to the meat of things, meaning that you've lost any semblance of caring about the married couple who serve as the primary stars.
the story sees the francisco barreiro's felix and laura caro's sol losing their pre-teen kids after letting them wander off and having ill-advised sex in their car. they then start sniping at each other, robbing them of any potential sympathy, until their children return. but they're not the same when they return, and that launches the movie into something more interesting.
it's deeply unfortunate that bogliano made the opening twenty minutes so insufferable, because he's good at building the film after that. the insanity of the escalating sequence of events is deeply entertaining, with over-the-top gore and some wonderful exploitation-style visual effects work. caro is very sold in what is essentially the lead role, though barreiro is a bit more wooden. the children are appropriately creepy and the climax works a bit better than it should have. but this is a film that sinks itself by destroying any real investment you could have early on, and that's a difficult hole to climb out of. that it almost manages it is impressive in itself, but not impressive enough to give the movie a pass.
