i realized this was a much smarter film than what i believed i was watching at the following moment: when the ghost wields her cleaver on the main character, the action suddenly comes to a halt, albeit momentarily. it stops because the main character doesn't feel the pain she should feel, and it only momentarily lasts because the woman's fears and anxieties don't entirely go away. it's brilliant detail, really.
and what blew me away was that final brawl on the bathroom floor. i don't think it's just my overactive mind imagining that the whole scene is intentionally made to look vaguely homoerotic, what with the placement of the camera, the sweeping music, the women's the moaning and panting, etc. i mean, how can you otherwise explain the ghost leaning forward for what seems like a kiss?
even aside from those two standout moments, it is a competent, enjoyable film. the lead actress overdoes it a little, but the supporting players provide a nice balance, giving off subtle expressions that could be read in multiple ways. even the use of music is great. the film could benefit from a little tightening here and there as well as doing away with some of the experimental cinematographic techniques that look rather boring today, but it works on the whole.
i'm starting to think that there may be many more sk directors other than kim ki-young who made weird, perverse films way ahead of their time, waiting to be rediscovered.
