it's been awhile since i watched the first movie, but i remember the characters pretty well. like in the first one, the relationship (now established - finally!) is threatened by a love triangle, and now also by distance. i thought this latter aspect was a good thing in that it dealt with an aspect not often seen in feel-good love comedies involving a couple that met as students. i liked the way separation was handled, but that's all i liked.
i appreciated the fact that the new third girl wasn't an awful caricature (sadly, there are still 2 characters filling this role), but the movie succeeded too well in stating her point. it wasn't that she was a perfect match, because being nice, hot and having common interests does not love make, but that her shining light on the dysfunctional aspect of the main relationship could not be unseen. to the very end, the movie didn't really contradict the fact that pie is dreadfully high-maintenance and takes everything and everyone for granted. i suppose the idea was that good-will carried from the first movie and viewers would root for the epic love of the main characters again, but people do break up, especially at that age. there is something cringe-worthy about how much kim does for pie this time around, and how romantic the movie thinks it is.
that being said, the cinematography is really, really beautiful and easily gets the movie an extra star.
