winter's tale is akiva goldsman's waterloo. this romantic fantasy adaptation of the mark helprin novel is the academy award-winning writers' directorial debut and may just be his last as well. adapting helprin's source material was always going to be a very dicey proposition; it's not the kind of thing that lends itself well to a filmic format but goldsman's script fails to do even a perfunctory job of making it work. the story fails to establish the romantic beats between colin farrell's lead protagonist and jessica brown findlay's consumption-ridden beverly, while the pacing makes for a confusing mish-mash in the opening act that it never recovers from.
the performances in the film are, for the most part, quite bad. farrell is occasionally up to the task but he is working with terrible dialogue and has to sell his character withough much to work with while russell crowe tears in with the right level of camp but comes off all wrong for the film's tone. the less said about will smith's cameo the better; only findley and william hurt come out with their dignity intact. goldsman certainly doesn't; his direction tries to play the story straight when the plot elements should have been handled with at least some level of winking acknowledgment regarding how silly they are. this isn't even of the "so bad it's good" capacity; it's simply flat-out bad.
