Review of Muppets Most Wanted

Overall Rating
the 2011 muppet movie reinvigorated a long-dormant franchise and invested it with all the charm and heart that we remembered from the brand's glory days. it was a wonderful underdog story with a simple but enjoyable plot, fun cameos and more. the inevitable sequel, muppets most wanted, tries very hard but just doesn't have the same magic. all the elements are there--the talent, the songs and even the humor--but it doesn't all coalesce in the same way. much of the problem can be laid at the feet of nicholas stoller and james bobin's script. it's ambitious and there are moments that really shine but it tries to do too much. the musical numbers aren't integrated nearly as well as the previous film and the international crime heist plot just sort of wanders directionlessly. kermit's own leg of the plot inside a siberian gulag is much better, with a fun performance from tina fey and the willingness on the part of ray liotta, danny trejo, stanley tucci and even dylan "hornswoggle" postl to give it their all. it's certainly not a bad film; that must be said. there are some very funny moments, the cameos work and the self-referential moments don't come off as indulgent the way you might expect. it pales in comparison to its predeccesor but it's still moderately enjoyable. still, it had the potential to be more than that and it ranks fairly low among muppet films when it's all said and done.
