back, a few months ago, i saw the trailer for this online and it blew me away. it looked like a gritty, dark, action extravaganza directed by john hillcoat and starring a plethora of awesome actors (c. affleck, winslet, ejiofor, and harrelson amongst others). i couldn't miss it. so it came to theatres and it didn't have the greatest reviews but if it was anything like its trailer i'd be very happy. it wasn't. not even close. the trailer was a creatively edited all out action thriller blow by blow knock you out 2 minutes. the movie itself was generic. sure the acting was great but that was read more

quick hit: triple 9 is a film in which a host of great actors try desperately to lift a bad script to watchable form. unfortunately, they aren't quite able to pull it off. john hillcoat's thriller about corrupt cops and criminals trying to pull off a heist by killing a good cop is too overcomplicated for its story, preferring half-thought out subplots to taut suspense or character development. there are just too many moving parts between the heist team, the russian mob queen ordering the job, the cops trying to solve the team's past crime and all the betrayals. it all comes off as read more
