i love a good feel good coming of age comedy. they are so good at making you feel good. put steve carrel in it and i'm pretty much there; put sam rockwell in it and i'm one thousand percent sold. so when i saw this back in 2013 in the theatre i loved it. loved it! in fact i put it in my top ten favourite movies of the year. and last night i was so excited when i put it in my dvd player to watch again.
on second viewing i still loved it. it was just so enjoyable and it is still in my top ten but it did lower a few spots (before it was #3). i love how the movie opens with steve carrel and you think he's being funny because, you know, he's steve carrel and then as you watch you realize he isn't funny in this, he's a dick.
i love the set up and the pay off in this film. i love the cast. carrel is fantastic, toni collete is fantastic, nat faxon is fantastic, jim rash is fantastic, the main lead was fantastic, sam rockwell was fantastic. my god is rockwell good in this. literally every line he says is funny, funnier or die laughing and the one time he isn't you just realize what a great guy he is and wish that you were his friend. he steals every scene he is in.
the other person who steals every scene she is in is allison janney. (her and rockwell don't share any scenes so their stealing scenes from everyone else never butts heads.) she is fantastic and i believe she was robbed of an oscar nomination for her performance as a loud mouth drunk who is actually kind of loveable and endearing.
the story is a typical coming of age story but faxon and rash have written such great, strong and memorable characters and as first time directors they bring a great sense of knowledge and skill to every aspect of the production. excellent musical choices and tight editing make for a movie that is just perfect in length, timing and storytelling. no wasted shots, no scenes that could be cut, no single minute that makes the film to long. it's just all round a wonderful film that you can't help but fall in love with.
here's to what oscar winners faxon and rash do next.
