armageddon and deep impact. the prestige and the illusionist. turner & hooch and k-9. freddy vs jason and alien vs predator! sometimes two movies with the same plot come out about the same time and one of them really overshadows the other. in 2013, that was gravity and all is lost. what works: all is lost is firmly rooted in one sailor's experience as he struggles to survive against catastrophically bad luck. the camera remains firmly focused on redford for the majority of the film, with minimal scoring and virtually no dialogue. all this combines to suck the audience in to his personal read more

I cannot for the life of me understand all the praise this film got. Robert Redford's performance is inscrutable. He's the only actor in the film. We follow him from start to finish. And yet we know nothing about his character, and we LEARN nothing about his character, except for some ancillary facts like that he somehow got to the middle of the Indian Ocean without being a very good sailor or being properly prepared for such a voyage. I mean, what kind of a sailor goes below decks in the middle of a storm and just lets the boat go broadside to the waves (and thus get rolled)? That's like,... read more
