that's it; it's official. i love gareth evans. i fucking love him. he is an amazing filmmaker and officially i will now see anything he does. his sense of action and visuals and gore and pacing and story and acting is just top notch.
which is why v/h/s 2 gets a higher rating then the first one. in fact, this film would have an even higher rating if it was just evans's segment but it's not so it does lower the rating a bit, but mostly this review is based on his piece.
quickly, the rest of the film is mostly as good as the first film. the wraparound story works better this time and when they first discover the videotapes there is a nice nod to the first film. i liked most of the seqgments and had a blast watching them. one thing good about these v/h/s movies is you have no idea for the most part where these stories are going to go.
the last segment, by jason eisner, i found to be the worst of the bunch. it wasn't terrible but it wasn't great and was really just loud noises and flashing lights that acted as a distraction from a weaker than the rest of the film story.
but then there is gareth evans' segment called safe haven. this segment starts off ominous and builds the tension slowly (yet quickly as it is a short) and then just fucking explodes into chaos and madness. the acting is top notch, the story is bat shit crazy yet mostly plausible and the effects and gore are just out of this fucking world. like the raid movies i just has so much fun watching this and wanted to watch it again the second it ended. gareth evens is a ridiculously talented director who so far in life can do no wrong.
his segment alone would get in the 90's somewhere but eisner's segment had to bring the film down in it's rating. if not for evans v/h/s 2 would still be a worthy successor to the original film. i would probably of given this film the same rating (or a little less--i'm directing that at you eisner) as it's predecessor but god damn safe haven was so good that v/h/s 2 gets a whopping 87 out of 100.
87/100
