i never liked cannibal holocaust and about a year ago i saw cannibal ferox and i thought it was even worse. recently i saw the green inferno and i gave up on 'cannibal films'. they all sucked and i thought that they never worked. jim mickle changed that for me. i really liked his debut film, mulberry st. it was really well done for a first film with an ultra low budget. this film, and his next, got a lot of buzz so even though i didn't like cannibal films i was excited for this none the less. and it was fantastic, it was right up my alley and it was exceptionally well done. it was intriguing,... read

good, atmospheric and surprising... until the horror tropes start raining in. the family wasn't contoured enough for the pieces to fall in, and most of the actions of the daughters in the last stretch were puzzling and unsatisfying. some great scenes (the father trying to keep the bones/secret from spilling out, the attempt at a final supper - until the incredibly convenient timing of the interruption) do not make a good movie, not even when it's a horror one - not that it was particularly scary at any point. read

film #29 of hoop-tober 2.0 completing my jim mickle double-feature for the day, we are what we are is a moody, almost dreamlike horror-thriller that mostly makes up in tone and direction what it lacks in story. it's not that mickle and nick damici's script is bad; it's just very predictable and, in swaths, narratively flat. the story has a solid if very familiar take on abnormal religious traditions, but it sags significantly in the middle and tries to draw out what we already know. that's unfortunate too, because the film has some great performances and fantastic direction from mickle. bill... read

a story with a fairly predictable ending, at times very boring, at times interesting. all the performances are quite good, but the little variety of scenarios may make it a bit monotonous read

Storms and floods in the Catskills disrupt the quietly cannibalistic traditions of a close-knit family. In remaking Jorge Grau's provocative but ultimately unsatisfying "Somos lo que hay (2010)", director Mickle and co-writer Nick Damici completely give up the urban social satire from the original and choose to focus on the family relationships instead. Closer to Villeneuve's "Prisoners" than to any byproduct of the Texas chainsaw franchise, polished spin on horror movie clichés plays it serious enough to make viewers care, but ultimately doesn't leave gorehounds disappointed. read
