as an irish person, hearing the synopsis of this film several years ago i instantly thought "bleurgh yet another stereotypical diddly-idle tale of irish immigration likely to be full of american actors butchering irish accents" so i gave it a miss. in terms of characterisation and rendering of 1950s ireland, i was expecting something akin to pat o'connor's horrendous 1995 adaptation of maeve binchy's circle of friends.... mercifully, i was pleasantly surprised to discover a cast of authentic, relatable characters inhabiting beautifully dreamy reimaginings of 1950s brooklyn and wexford. a read more
