the first hatchet was a welcome return to the gory, schlocky horror films when the genre had fallen almost completely into b-movie fare and had a fun time of it. the second was a disappoint by comparison as it tried and failed to replicate the first's success thanks to a redundant script. the one really good part was the casting, which had danielle harris take on the role of marybeth duncan and tony todd chew the hell out of scenery.
now we have hatchet iii, which has better direction from franchise newcomer bj mcdonnell but a weaker script. a plot's logic should never have to resort to the explanation of "it's a horror film." but that's what this one does constantly. after a great, gory opening where marybeth (harris again) kills victor crowley in definitive fashion--points for starting off your film with such a death, by the way--the film quickly squanders its goodwill. characters make moronic decisions throughout and die. why? because it's a horror film. the solution to stopping the monster involves marybeth delivering the ashes of victor's father to him. why? because it's a horror film. you could keep going with this; it is supremely frustrating.
harris delivers another great performance, but she is marginalized because her character is wasted. derek mears is the other good performance as a swat team leader. the rest of the cast largely overacts or is just badly miscast, with the exception of sid haig in a cameo. the gore is great and the film is competently shot and edited, but this is still a mediocre slasher film at best.
