i don't usually say this, in fact it is usually the opposite, but the machine can benefit from being much longer. at 90 minutes it feels too rushed and the plot too confusing and makes the film sum up to less than its parts.
its parts involve great looking production design with nifty effects (for a low budget british film), a fully realized future world, cool ideas, a great central performance, some great side characters, a slimey as hell bad guy straight from the robocop camp, mostly great looking cinematography, cool music and a kick ass machine.
those parts are all great but the film is too confusing and everything rushes by so quick and evety scene moves to the next one so fast that you never quite get what is happening and you never feel an emotional connection to the characters and story. that, plus the actual story isn't that original. we've seen this done a thousand times before and in very similar ways, unlike say ex machina, which is pretty similar but much more original.
the machine in the end somewhat squanders it's potential by being too short and too messy but it's still a worthwhile watch for sci-fi buffs. it flies by, it's entertaining and it looks cool. there is enough to like to make you invest your time and it's only 90 minutes so it is short enough to not be bothered too much by the things that don't work.
