not as mean-spirited as its concept suggests, raze is by no means a great movie but gets by on its exploitation roots and some very solid acting considering the genre. co-writer/director josh c. waller did the film a favor by treating the film as seriously as it would be if it was about men in the same situation. the film is an exploitation film but it isn't exactly exploitative in the sense that a similar film would be. the movie doesn't linger on the purient value of women in tank tops wrestling around; the brutal nature of the fights make it uncomfortable to watch but impressive at the same time.
the acting is incredibly good from all involved. zoe bell has certainly come into her own since death proof; there she got by on personality and charm, while here she actually turns in a good performance. sure, it gets a little bit over-the-top but that befits the genre. traci thomas, allene quincy and bailey anne borders deliver great work in supporting roles, while doug jones, bruce thomas and sherilyn fenn make solid villains. a mid-film cameo is well worth the surprise factor and while the third act twist is entirely predictable, it's satisfying. this isn't a particularly memorable film and it's certainly not an amazing piece of work, but it's a surprisingly enjoyable time.
