the battery is the ultimate "bros before hoes" film. this film holds the sanctity of friendship between people at the highest level and it really commits to exploring this relationship.
i didn't find the central relationship all that compelling, actually. however, i didn't find it uninteresting either. there are nuances and wrinkles to this relationship that make it more interesting to explore but not enough to make the film a compelling experience. this is a film that truly believes in friendship as being the highest form of relationships that a human can engage in. despite some of the more annoying elements of "bro" culture that it wrangles into this relationship, i respect the film for committing to that idea in a cinematic world that often holds romantic love as the ideal relationship between human beings. that is a very admirable place for a film to go and does make this film stand out in some respects.
you can tell that the budget here was really low. it didn't hinder the storytelling too much and they are able to get enough out of the effects to not make the zombie premise just a gimmick. but, you can tell during certain moments that the narrative dragged a little bit because of the restrictions that the filmmaker was under when he made this film.
in the end, the film was mildly entertaining and went some mildly interesting places with the premise. the languid pace and the commitment to develop the relationship and the characters worked pretty well even when the narrative didn't always work to move the movie along. it was far superior to world war z in its effects though. which is sad when you consider the gap in budgets between the two.
