so...this movie is like deadpool meets saturday night live meets...um...every romantic comedy? sure, lets go with that.
having seen trailers for they came together, i postponed watching this movie for years. 3, actually. i just didnt know if i was gonna not to be able to buy paul rudd and amy poehler in a romantic comedy. not just because it sounded corny and “too indie” for me, but at the time, i hadnt seen anything either of them had starred in. their biggest hit at the time was saturday night live, which i wasnt watching at the time, considering i was only 13-15 years old when actors finished their run and i wasnt ready for that kind of elevated humor. not yet.
now that im quite a bit older (21 years and 7 months), i gotta day i shouldve watched this film earlier than i did. rudd and poehler are electrifying, as is this entire cast? who wouldve thought that christopher meloni, and jason mantzoukas could actually act and not grate my skin like nails on a chalkboard? well, i love meloni, its more jason. i havent been able to find a film i love him in, until now (much like my experience with amy adams in arrival, i might add.). its so refreshing, quite honestly.
man, this film is hilarious. i didnt expect it to be, and these kinds of surprises make me fall in love with a film. the stuff with max greenfield and teyonah paris (opposite paul rudd and amy poehler, respectively) are some of the most hilarious things ive heard in a film since tropic thunder. another thing i appreciated is that every time something goes wrong in the film, one of the main characters always says “shit!”. it brings some ground levelness to their character in the weirdest of ways, because that feels like how a normal person would react in this situation. i know im talking a lot about the comedy, but the exaggeration takes this film to another level of romantic comedy.
the only “bad part” of this movie is how far it doubles down on the comedy. i love the comedy, no doubt, but at points, i did feel a little something missing in rudds job, his dreams, and how the film wraps up. the film seems relatively unconcerned with these things, even if it is poking fun at the convential romantic comedy.
so, i think this is worth a blind blu-ray buy. after all, its only $9.99 at best buy right now.
