with a cast like the one child 44 has and an interesting premise as the one provided by tom smith's 2008 book, one should be able to make a good thriller in their sleep. that daniel espinosa couldn't accomplish that is extremely disappointing. chalk a lot of it up to the script by richard price, which does a poor job of boiling off the book's subplots and instead leaves an unfocused narrative that goes in too many directions before settling down into the serial killer arc. and even then disgraced soviet security agent leo demidov's hunt for a child killer seems at times superfluous to the family melodrama and shallow exploration of corruption in the soviet union during the cold war, leaving us unsure of what the film is trying to accomplish. whatever it is, it doesn't succeed.
it doesn't help that the phenomenal cast including tom hardy, noomi rapace, gary oldman, vincent cassel, joel kinnaman and paddy considine are trying to work their way around ridiculously thick russian accents. they succeed for the most part but it makes it harder for them to establish a working chemistry with each other and the performances are a bit stilted as a result. the film is visually solid but unremarkable, making for a film that feels longer than its two hour-plus running time.
