i wasn't expecting great things, so i wasn't disappointed. on the bright side, it skipped the "rational character doesn't believe" scenes and handled partner well - he was funny, but not comedic relief and there was no tension over different working styles and so on. on the other side, it had the wife nags cop for neglecting his family cliche; i would have liked the movie more if it focused more on the police side and cut some of the family scenes or if it did more with the family (more horror, more exploration of dynamics, more anything to give them some real impact). some fun lines give it... read more

there are moments when deliver us from evil is riveting and tense. those moments come when scott derrickson and paul harris boardman's script is focused, giving eric bana's police officer something solid in terms of a plot to latch onto. unfortunately those periods are undercut by a swaths of directionless wandering. the film, fictionalized from the life of new york cop-turned-demonologist ralph sarchie, spends far too much time wandering through seemingly isolated events until it establishes the narrative tie to them and by that point the movie is almost half-over. it's difficult for the read more
