elizabeth banks' new romantic comedy starts off really well but quickly loses itself in generic tropes. banks is a deeply likable lead as meghan miles, a reporter who is about to get a big network deal that will be her redemption afer a fall from grace but must navigate her way through los angeles during "carpocalypse" in order to get her big promotion. there are some very funny moments and the set-up is good, all the way through to the one-night stand that precedes her frantic journey. after that it is extremely hit-and-miss. a scene in a crack house with some very helpful gang members is funny, as are a couple of other individual beats. but other moments, such as a scene where she comes across an orthodox synagogue, is dull and ininspired. the subplot involving james marsden's character is underwritten and thus falls flat, as do gillian jacobs and sarah wright as meghan's girlfriends.
the script hits a lot of the usual "fish out of water" beats and they generally all fall flat. the constant assumption of banks as a prostitude is a little eyebrow-raising, while the direction by steven brill is professional, but as generic as the script. of course it's all wrapped in a neat, tidy bow by the end and that provides the perfect ending to a vaguely competent but ultimately failed comedy.
