i hesitated for quite some time when it came to watching this. gothic romance is a genre i am thoroughly uninterested in, but it's del toro and the visuals were bound to be a treat. i couldn't resist it, but i can't be fair either: nothing about the story or characters drew me in the slightest. when i say that the cinematography and the production design are at least half the movie, am i biased by my lack of interest in the genre? after all, this is explicitly a genre movie, and i am unwelcome. as is often the case in del toro's works (i'm including the dreadful the strain here), the dialogue... read more

Shit, bullshit, nonsense as you want This film has nothing to do with horror, it's just talking, talking and talking again. Almost the whole movie I was bored and fell asleep at the end, I watched it with only one eye and I was glad that I watched it to the end. The only thing that was positive about the film was the set design, masks, effects, etc., but that's not enough when the plot and script are worth a big slipper. So my rating is 4 out of 10 and I still narrowed my eyes.

the most impressive and rewarding thing about crimson peak is the very careful attention to detail and that all of those details are utilized in such a way that it creates a very creepy, but lush, environment that is a joy to inhabit with these characters for the length of the movie. guillermo del toro has a real talent for creating these types of atmospheres and worlds and filling them with visuals that are both interesting and memorable at the same time. that strength is utilized to maximum effect in this outing, as he returns to his roots by using horror elements to get at something else.... read more

horror x52 2019 a horror released in 2015 watched this on arrow video blu-ray. holy shit did arrow video outdo themselves with this blu-ray release. it is a beautiful boxset with a lot of extras (physical and on disc). image quality was splendid. i started watching del toro films way too late; the shape of water was the first movie i saw of his in the theater. i am a huge fan of his for his visuals. this movie was absolutely gorgeous. the cinematography, the sets, the costumes, oh my god, did this movie look amazing. and does del toro how to frame shots, i loved the look of this movie... read more

once again, guillermo del toro uses childhood fears to create his stories. as for the technical part, nothing to blame. but in terms of the script, i think the story is unattractive and overly predictable. what you should expect from del toro. read more

I was initially very excited for this film. I love Guillermo del Toro. So I had high expectations for this film. But upon watching it I was very disappointed and not amused by it. It was a fairly cliche story line with a fairly cliche everything really. It was just there, nothing I would probably watch again or care to say I enjoyed. Super disappointed. read more

My quick rating - 7;4/10. This was the movie for me to see on Halloween this year; that is for sure. As usual; Guillermo del Toro visually stuns the audience with every single scene. The locations that are presented are an absolute marvel. Granted a film cannot be just a national geographic on location shoot alone and this film delivers. The story itself is a mixture of two stories really; one that is ghost story and the other that is romance/thriller. I really like this gothic horror/thriller from Guillermo Del Toro and this would have to be his best in my view. Mia Wasikowska plays her role well, she is ably supported by Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam. The set design, costumes and especially the cinematography is top class and the film had a look similar to Tim Burtons Edward Scissorhands or Sleepy Hollow except darker.
