film 2 of obligatory october of horror
couldn't do a halloween list without a found footage film, eh?
as far as found footage goes, this is certainly better than average. the acting is far above par for the genre, the characters are strong, and the atmosphere is slowly built up, culminating in a great last act.
conventional genre trappings are still there; cheap fake out scares that only exist to startle you without advancing the plot and a lot of quiet dark security cam footage.
aside from being kept in the dark in the literal sense, the film also does a good job keeping you in the dark on how real the "miracles" actually are. i enjoy when a film keeps you guessing by giving you some clues along the way.
one detail that this gets right that a lot of found footage style films don't: the video quality generally matches the cameras the characters are using to record. the audio doesn't but quite frankly if they used authentic headcam audio this would be unwatchable.
as a found footage film, it's one of the best i've seen.
as a general horror film, it's still really good.
as a film regardless of genre, it's pretty good.
