film #16 of hoop-tober 2.0
every time someone slams the found footage format, i find myself wanting to point out that it isn't the format but how it's being used. the right found footage-style horror film can still be fantastic, and the sacrament is a great example of that. ti west delivers another very good film here with this story of a vice documentary crew heading to a religious commune in another part of the world and finding out that things aren't as hippy-dippy, peace and love as they might suspect.
the key things that make this film work are the script, the performances and the way west manages to get past some of the genre's more common flaws. with an experienced film crew behind the camera within the story, there's no need to the nausea-inducing shaky-cam aesthetic. the film smartly avoids the usual route of having a host of insufferable characters; the trio of leads have their flaws but come off as real and relatively relatable. gene jones delivers a great performance as the cult leader "father," while amy seimetz gives a surprisingly nuanced portrayal for a film like this in her work as commune member caroline.
there are some who may think this film too slow, and i understand that concern. as opposed to many jump scare-laden supernatural found footage films though, this one is spending its time building a story instead of just biding its time until the climax. the final act is quite disturbing because of how real it is; without spoiling much, it is heavily inspired by real events. the sacrament is certainly one of the better mockumentary/found footage horror films in recent memory.
