Review of Open Grave

Overall Rating
gonzalo lópez-gallego's open grave is an intriguing horror-thriller that doesn't quite live up to its potential. there is a great set-up, with sharlto copley's character waking up in a mass grave suffering from amnesia only to escape and find that there are a group of others in a nearby house with the same problem. as chris and eddie borey's script expands itself out things become more intriguing and the mysteries actually pay off in a way that not a lot of independent horror manages to accomplish. the problem, unfortunately, is that the payoff comes amidst some moments of very poor dialogue and some two-dimensional characterizations that don't fly. the script tries to be too clever at times and a some of the character decisions just don't make sense at all. the performances by copley, thomas kretschmann, erin richards and josie ho are fine for what is needed; copley is a charismatic actor who deserves better material to work with. lópez-gallego doesn't add much to the film in the way of stylistic flourishes but he is a competent enough director and the cinematography is fine. this is an okay film that probably doesn't merit a second viewing but won't make you regret the first one.
